What is Conscious and Creative Parenting?

By Christine Gerzon

Being a Conscious Parent means being:

  • Aware of the sacred responsibility and power we have in our children’s lives.
We teach them what it means to human by nurturing them with unconditional love teaching them our values by example. We practice acceptance and forgiveness in our daily interactions.

  • Aware of our own thoughts and feelings before we take action.
We often misinterpret our child’s behavior and react automatically listening to a toxic voice in our head. This automatic response is based on old programming we learned in our own childhood and can lead to ineffective actions causing more struggles.

  • Aware of our children’s thoughts and feelings.
Ask questions and listen before taking action. Assume that children are behaving in the best way can.

Being a Creative Parent means:

  • Creating a lifelong relationship with your child based on sharing power so that your child learns what it means to be in a loving relationship. Create a way to solve interpersonal conflicts so that your child learns how to solve conflicts. All children need to have a sense of autonomy in order to develop a core self based on their creativity and personal power.

  • Creating a home based on safety and trust which is predictable, where there are routines and family rituals. Mistakes are seen as an opportunity for learning rather than a chance to punish. Negative feelings are accepted and discussed. Create a balance between autonomy and safety rather than between rewards and punishments.

  • Creating a sense of community based on cooperation not competition. Creating a sense of belonging to a group of people who can be relied on for support.

  • Creating a world that reflects our true nature and our values of love and respect for others. Protecting our children from the toxic aspects of our culture: consumerism and entertainment that is sexist, racist or violent.
